Know the registration term
Domain names are registered for a term, after which renewal is normally required. Extensions may have different grace, redemption or deletion rules. Do not assume you can recover a name once it expires.
Keep contact details up to date
Use an account email that will remain available if your website is offline. Store registrar login credentials securely and keep track of who has permission to manage the domain.
Compare renewal fees
Introductory promotions can differ from renewal prices. Check the upcoming renewal amount in your registrar's portal, and use a working payment method well before the expiry date.
What a registrar transfer involves
You may be able to move a domain to another registrar, subject to registry and transfer rules. Steps can include unlocking the domain, requesting an authorization code, approving emails and waiting for a transfer window. Not all extensions follow identical rules.
DNS does not need to change just because the registrar does
Website and email availability depend on correctly configured DNS. Save all current records before changing domain settings. If nameservers remain the same, the site may not need a visible change at all.
If your domain is expiring soon
Renew first where appropriate, or ask both providers for the best sequence. Starting a transfer too late can add unnecessary risk if the current domain status prevents completion.
