Domain transfer versus hosting migration

A domain transfer moves management of a registered domain to another eligible registrar. A hosting migration moves your website files and databases to another server. They can happen independently.

If you are happy with your current registrar, you can usually keep the domain there while pointing DNS to Estha hosting. This may be simpler than transferring both services simultaneously.

Before requesting a transfer

  • Confirm the domain has not expired and that you can sign in to its current registrar account.
  • Check registry-specific transfer restrictions and lock periods.
  • Where required, unlock the domain and obtain the authorization code from the existing registrar.
  • Record current nameservers and DNS records, including email-related MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC values.
  • Check whether a transfer includes a renewal term, additional fees or an approval email.

Do not publish the authorization code in chats or social media posts. Transfer rules vary by TLD, so confirm the process for your specific domain in the current registrar and Estha portals.

Keep the website working during the change

A registrar transfer does not have to change your nameservers. However, mistakes in the DNS configuration can interrupt both the site and mail. Keep a copy of records before taking any action and allow time for changes to propagate.

Read renewal and transfer questions and how to move a website if you are changing hosting too.
